As the second edition of Bizruption concluded, there was a contagious energy in the air, instead of sagging shoulders at the end of the day. We were obliged and overwhelmed at the same time, to see people leaving with a broad smile on their faces.
Dinesh, CEO of NetStripes kicked off Bizruption II with an ice breaker which he termed “reimagining the networking event” there was lots of laughter and energy created in less than 60 seconds which saw people high fiving and literally running around, inspiring. This allowed people to loosen up their shoulders, relax and first of all enjoy each other’s company. As it progressed almost all speakers, stressed upon the fact that SMEs and startups are more partners rather than competitors. They all focused on the main objective of small businesses being digitally enabled and the importance of small business in the economy as a whole.
Murray Hurps, General Manager of Fishburners introduced Fishburners and defined startups for everyone. He also shared some success stories of disruptive startups and how they changed the game in their respective industries.
Lawrence Gibbons, President of Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce, as the guest speaker gave a great insight into the how Pyrmont and Ultimo evolved over the years from a sleepy hamlet to a thriving business and start-up hub.
Angelo Grasso, Board Director of CIO Executive Council, who ran a segment of thought leadership, spoke of the importance of a digital presence for every small businesses that must embody their business strategy, their brand essence and their unique selling proposition to prospective customers.
Angelo also reminded the audience of a few very important points shared by Kate Carnell CEO of Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) from Bizruption I, in particular the importance of the small businesses in Australia and how digitally enabled businesses grew faster and employed on average two extra people.
Significantly asking small businesses to explore every possibility to become fully digitally enabled in order their businesses can grow faster. Kate also mentioned, if more small businesses were digitally enabled and employed one other person it would solve the problem of unemployment in Australia.
Attendees included various officials from business chambers, including NSW Business chamber, Parramatta chamber, Haymarket business chamber, and Pyrmont Ultimo Business Chamber along with technologist and small business owners. There was consensus in the audience on how SMEs are the biggest employers in this economy and also the biggest contributors to GDP, so not even the government can afford to take us lightly.
On lighter note stand up comedian Dane Hiser from UTS Comedy entertained the audience with lots of giveaways from tech start-ups and other small business including Recomazing, Studio 504, and the Wine Gallery.
The fun and excitement followed by the 60 second Soapbox or the moment of glory for 10 small business owners pitching their businesses. These were from a variety of industries ranging from photography, retreats, wines, dispute management and a lot more.
The proceeding of Bizruption II concluded with everyone enjoying each others company over a glass of wine and some pizza. Yes a Networking evening re-imagined.
