Ever wonder why millennials get 500 likes on each picture they post without spending a cent but your business advert only gets 1 after spending 50 bucks?
It’s pretty simple. There are a few basic reasons why your professionalism is being trumped by a bunch of kids, (written from the perspective of a millennial).
To understand the traps associated with social media, we have to firstly define it for what it is.
The common trap here is that many businesses fail to grasp the fundamental concept of social media, and as such, fail to use it in the way it’s meant to be used.
First and foremost, it’s a platform for people to communicate and share ideas, not a digital marketing platform for you to sell your product.
Social media is social; it’s made up of people, and it’s driven by interaction.
Despite how “online” social media really is, many would be surprised to know how large a portion of social media is actually real life.
“Like our Facebook Page”, “Follow us on Twitter”, are all examples of how social media is embedded in the physical world. So then, just making a Facebook Page or Twitter Account won’t be enough, you need to make an account and encourage people to interact with it.
But that’s still not enough, you need to interact with them. The term “social” refers to a two (or more) way interaction. If you stick by yourself and pretend that you’re selling your product, you’re not being “social”, you’re being a “seller”.
Online Advertising & Support
Once the “social” aspect clicks, you need to start focusing on the “media” that helps engage your audience. You need content that is eye-catching and interesting; content which will grab the attention of the average reader in 3 seconds or less.
To give you an idea, you need to produce highly aesthetic and visually appealing content for your readers. Low res pics off Google Images won’t work, and neither will MS Paint. You need a creative mind to think of catchy short phrases, and a quick mind to apply them.
Not only that, you need to push out content consistently to let your audience know that you exist. Consistency varies from circumstance to circumstance, once every couple of days would be ideal.
It sounds like a tall order for some, but those who are successful rise up to tall orders.
