A quick glance at our first ever event ‘BIZRUPTION – Small Business Owners Disrupting Industry’ attended by Kate Carnell AO – CEO of Australian Chamber of Commerce and Alex Greenwich MP – Independent Member for Sydney.
Technology is disrupting every industry around the globe. The consumerization of technology is making technology cheaper and more powerful.
Information and data is highly democratized, in other words information is available to all of us in abundance and everyone has equal access to all the data.
These two factors are changing consumer behavior and it is the confluence of these two major factors and the change in consumer behavior is creating the disruption we see around us.
There is disruption in every industry happening, no industry is safe, no company is safe how big nor small.
We believe that however small businesses don’t have to be the victims of this technological shift aka disruption, but can be a party to the change or even the creator of the change in their respective industries.
NetStripes organized Bizruption, a meet up for small business owners and technologists to fuel discussion around innovation in their respective industries.
For when smart people who understand their industries and their issues meet with technologist in an environment of creativity, innovation is bound to take place.
Even small changes collectively can be as powerful as Neil Armstrong’s famous words on landing on the moon. “Small step for man, giant leap for mankind”. This was the essence of Bizruption.
Bizruption is also about creating awareness on a few vitally important pieces of statistics that has come about by research report by Deloitte Access Economics, which states that only 16% of small businesses in Australia are fully digitally engaged.
It also reveals these businesses have earned 20% or $350,000 of extra revenues per annum as opposed to the other 84% which are still to be fully digitally engaged and mostly operating under the old paradigm and are prone to being the victims of change.
Bizruption is also an effort by Netstripes to help small business owners to come out as leaders in the wake of this change.
The inaugural Bizruption at Fishburners was attended by the highly influential CEO of the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ACCI) Kate Carnell AO – who shared her thoughts on the importance of small businesses being digitally engaged.
She spoke of the importance of small business in the economy and how digitally engaged businesses have proved to have more growth than those who are not.
Ms. Carnell made the valuable point “there are nearly two million small businesses in the country, if nearly everyone of them achieved growth and employed just one additional employee, Australia will not have an unemployment problem”.
She concluded her speech the leaving a question behind, “how can small businesses be digitally engaged?”
Alex Greenwich MP – Independent member for Sydney who also shared his experience as a small business owner and his time when he worked from Fishburners so he can meet and understand the start-ups in Sydney.
Alex was another who appreciates the need and urgency for small businesses being digitally engaged.
Amongst the over 70 small business owners and technologist who attended the inaugural Bizruption, there were members and officials of over 10 Chambers of commerce participating including the NSW Chamber which is the apex body for business chambers in our state.
Everyone echoing the same sentiments of the need to create mass awareness and action on helping small business to be digitally engaged.
As Dinesh De Silva, CEO & Founder of NetStripes said “I believe small businesses no longer need to be the victims of disruption by being a party to the change if not creators of the change.
No Industry is safe, no business is safe, however, large or small”.
Due to the unanimous support for this cause, it has inspired us and the paved the way Bizruption 2, now scheduled on 15th July 2015.
