Do you have a website that isn’t mobile-friendly and want to know why it’s so critical to getting ahead?
Consider the fact that 65% of the total population of Australia are now using smartphones to do the following:
- 90% use smartphones to research local information
- 78% use their smartphones to research products online
- 41% use their smartphones to make purchases.
In terms of Internet time spent by the average owner of a smartphone, it is close to 2 hours per day. Just taking into account the smallest percentage, the amount of people purchasing online is just under 6.4 million; whereas the amount of people researching locally using their mobile Internet connection is just over 14 million.
In addition, 90% of people switch between devices to achieve a single purchasing goal. So even if the desktop handles most customer interactions, people can still use their mobile devices during the sales process. The tendency is to browse for things of personal interest using phones to then move to a desktop to finalise the purchase. So if your site doesn’t respond to every device you’ll break the chain of their buying habits.
Another issue is that your mobile responsiveness is important for Google’s ranking of ‘earned’ traffic. Google’s new Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) algorithm penalises sites for failing to be mobile friendly. This change means mobile friendly pages are selected over desktop-friendly pages by Google’s search result methods. So without mobile-optimisation any SEO you employ can only lift your rankings by so much. Becoming mobile-friendly is part of a package of improvements you need to make to become fully digitally engaged.
